Modern HD-over-coax carries 5 MP down ordinary 3+1 cable, and on the buildings below it beats an IP system on cost and simplicity at once. On the ones after it, it does not — and we will say so.
HD-over-coax runs 2 MP or 5 MP down the RG59 an older system left behind. Reusing it removes the single most expensive and disruptive part of an upgrade — pulling fresh cable through an occupied building.
Four cameras on a shopfront that will still be four cameras in five years. What IP really buys is cheap change later — another camera, another branch, a new position — and on a system that never changes, that advantage is never spent while the price difference is real on day one.
A DVR you never connect to a router has no remote attack surface at all. For a site where that matters more than viewing from a phone, that is a feature and not a limitation.
No IP addressing, no VLAN, no PoE budget. A camera is a BNC connector and a power lead, and a replacement unit goes back on the wall without anyone touching a network configuration.
5 MP is the practical ceiling on coax. Where identification matters — counters, gates, dock doors — 8 MP with digital zoom holds detail this cannot.
On-camera human and vehicle classification, line crossing and intrusion zones are IP features. Analog gives you pixel-change motion detection, which is a different and much noisier thing.
If nothing is in the walls yet, CAT6 costs about the same to pull as 3+1 and reaches a little further. Everything it enables — 8 MP, on-camera analytics, adding a camera by adding a switch port — comes free with the choice. There is no saving in choosing coax for a building being wired today.
TVI, CVI and AHD all reach 5 MP over the same cable and the same connectors. The difference never shows up at the camera — it shows up three years later, when the recorder decides which replacement cameras you are allowed to buy.

We quote a penta-brid recorder as standard — one that accepts all four formats plus IP. It costs a little more today and it is the difference between adding a camera in three years and replacing the recorder to do it.
HD cameras and a new recorder on the existing RG59. The fastest and cheapest real upgrade there is — a standard-definition system becomes 2 MP or 5 MP in a day, with no new cable and no wall damage.
A penta-brid recorder takes TVI, CVI, AHD, CVBS and IP cameras at once. Your coax cameras stay where they are and IP units go in one at a time on CAT6, at the positions that genuinely need 8 MP.
Ethernet-over-coax converters put a full IP camera on an existing RG59 run. It costs more per camera than either option above, and it is the right answer when the cable route physically cannot be redone.
Most CCTV quotes price the cameras and hide everything that decides whether the picture still holds in year five. These are the four things we specify, and they all appear on the paper you get.
2 MP covers general coverage comfortably; 5 MP Turbo HD goes where detail is worth paying for. Chosen per position during the survey, along with fixed or varifocal lenses and the IR range each mounting height actually needs.
One 3+1 run per camera — a single jacket carrying the coaxial video core and three copper cores for power. The honest difference from PoE is not the number of cables but where the power starts: at a central SMPS rather than the recorder, and a badly earthed supply leg is the most common cause of a picture that rolls.

Connect the recorder to your router and you get live view, playback and push alerts on a phone over the manufacturer's encrypted cloud. Leave it disconnected and the system records exactly the same. It is a decision, not a default.
The body is a coverage decision, not a taste one. A varifocal unit in a corridor can be tuned to the view after it is on the wall; a fixed dome in the same place is whatever angle it shipped with.

Doubling the disk doubles the days, and motion-triggered recording stretches every figure above by roughly two and a half to three times — usually the cheaper route to a 30-day retention target than buying a bigger drive. The hardware barely changes between these. What changes is the camera count, where the 5 MP units go, and whether the recorder ever gets plugged into a router.
Four to eight cameras is normally a single day on site, and an upgrade that reuses existing coax is often quicker than that. Sixteen with fresh cabling is two to three days.
